Tarot is a mirror.

There’s so much more to tarot than stereotypes.

Our brains are wired to notice patterns and make connections. The images in a tarot deck are evocative, and the meanings drawn from those images will be different each time you approach them, because the context in which you’re viewing them is constantly changing. No two readings are alike, because no two readers and no two seekers are exactly alike.

While some tarot practitioners use tarot cards to predict the future, that’s not really my style. For one thing, I don’t believe the future is fixed—a choice you make today will affect what happens tomorrow. But more than that, I find in my own life tarot is most useful for bringing me back to myself and my story, for helping me to remember the resources I have, and for bringing clarity when my brain has been spinning so loudly that I start to feel disoriented.

I have been using tarot as a means of self-discovery since 2014. It is one of my favorite tools of discernment, and I have amassed a diverse collection of decks to choose from.

FAQ and Logistics

  • A tarot deck is, more or less, an expanded playing card deck, and in fact started out as a game. As a tool of “divination,” each card in the deck has a set of associated traditional meanings, which are interpreted in reference to the question being asked and in relation to the surrounding cards that are drawn, as well as whatever stands out to the reader and/or seeker in the cards that are drawn.

There are 78 cards in a tarot deck:

    • 22 Major Arcana—these cards deal with larger themes in life and are always illustrated with evocative images.

    • 56 Minor Arcana—these cards deal with the day-to-day, are divided into four suits (which can correspond to the suits in a standard playing card deck), and are sometimes fully illustrated and sometimes just depict the symbols of the suit. The four suits are as follows:

      • Cups: this suit is associated with emotion.

      • Swords: this suit is associated with thought and communication.

      • Wands: this suit is associated with passion and creativity.

      • Pentacles or Coins: this suit is associated with material things.

  • Just like with a spiritual companionship session, no two tarot readings will be exactly alike. Generally, however, it will look something like this:

    • I will start by asking you what you’re looking for clarity on—if you have a specific question you’re trying to answer or if you’re just looking for the general energy of a situation.

    • I’ll present you with a selection of 2-3 decks to choose from, and once you’ve chosen, I will shuffle the cards, and then draw them and lay them out face down in whatever spread (a configuration of tarot cards in which each position usually has a predetermined question assigned to it) I’ve decided makes the most sense to use in relation to your question.

    • We’ll then look at the cards one by one and discuss possible meanings. Your input in this process is even more important than mine—what you see in the cards will often reveal things that have been happening in your subconscious mind and help bring them to the surface.

After the reading is over, I will type up a brief summary of what we discussed for your reference and send it to you as a secure Google doc. Everything we talk about will be kept in strict confidence.

  • Readings are normally scheduled for 45 minutes, but may run a bit shorter than that.

  • I charge $75 per reading, but I have some capacity to work on a sliding scale if this cost is prohibitive.
